Twilio call cost calculator for outbound teams

This Twilio call cost calculator estimates what your team will pay Twilio each month to call US numbers from the browser: both legs of every call, recording, local numbers, and the surcharges Twilio may add when many calls go unanswered. Enter your call volume; it uses Twilio’s published rates.

Updated

Key takeaways

  • Each answered minute costs $0.0205 with recording: $0.014 phone leg, $0.004 browser leg, $0.0025 recording.
  • A local number adds $1.15 a month, and Rapidialer seats are $5 per seat a month.
  • Twilio may add $0.015 per unanswered or six-second call once those reach 20% of a month’s calls.
  • The calculator bills each answered call for its average length plus half a minute, and at least one minute.

Four steps to an estimate

  1. Enter your call volume

Add the number of reps, how many numbers each dials per day, and how many days a month they call. If you already call through Twilio, your call logs give you the real figures.

  2. Describe a typical call

Set the share of dials answered by a person or voicemail, and the average length of those calls. Cold lists usually have a low answer rate; scheduled callbacks a much higher one.

  3. Choose recording and numbers

Recording adds a per-minute charge on every answered minute. Count every local number you keep, including the ones you use for local presence.

  4. Read both totals

The first total is your expected bill. If the surcharge table appears, your inputs cross one of Twilio’s short-call thresholds, and the second total shows the bill if Twilio applies those charges.

How the estimate is worked out

A call placed from a browser has two billed legs: the browser leg between the rep’s browser and Twilio ($0.004 per minute), and the phone leg to the number dialed ($0.014 per minute). Twilio rounds each call up to the next whole minute, so the calculator bills each answered call for its average length plus half a minute, and at least one minute. It assumes the browser leg bills the same minutes as the phone leg, that recording ($0.0025 per minute) covers every answered minute, and that unanswered dials are not billed by the minute.

Twilio’s North America terms add two possible charges that matter for cold calling. If 20% or more of a month’s calls are unanswered or last six seconds or less, Twilio may charge $0.015 for each of those calls. If the month’s average call lasts under 30 seconds, it may charge $0.01 for each billed minute. The calculator averages call length across all dials, including unanswered ones, and counts only unanswered dials toward the short-call share, so quick hang-ups on answered calls would add to it.

A worked example. The calculator opens with five reps who each make 80 dials a day on 20 days: 8,000 dials a month. At 30% answered, 2,400 calls connect, and at 1.5 minutes each they bill 4,800 minutes once rounding is added. Those minutes cost $67.20 on the phone leg, $19.20 on the browser leg and $12.00 for recording, and five local numbers add $5.75: $104.15 to Twilio. Five Rapidialer seats at $5 per seat a month bring the total to $129.15, about $25.83 per rep.

Reading the surcharge table. In that example, 5,600 of the 8,000 dials go unanswered, far above Twilio’s 20% line, and the average call across all dials comes to 27 seconds, under its 30-second line. If Twilio applied both charges, they would add $132.00, more than the minutes themselves. Raise the average answered call to two minutes and the short-average charge drops off; the unanswered-call charge stays while 20% or more of dials go unanswered. Use your own answer rate from call analytics rather than a guess.

What the estimate leaves out. It assumes every dial goes to a US number and every rep calls from a browser softphone, so both legs bill. Inbound calls back to your numbers, international calls and Twilio’s taxes and fees are not counted, and the seat line is the regular price. Turn off Include Rapidialer seats to see Twilio’s part alone, and Record calls if you leave call recording off.

Rates come from Twilio’s US voice pricing page and the terms listed under Sources, checked on the date shown; the guide to Twilio cost per minute explains each line. Taxes, regulatory fees and international calls are not included. Twilio’s prices change, so treat the result as an estimate and compare it with your Twilio usage after the first month.

What does a 3-rep team pay Twilio a month?

A 3-rep team making 60 dials a day each on 20 days, with 40% answered and 3-minute calls, pays about $106.77 to Twilio and $121.77 with seats. Here is how the calculator gets there.

The team makes 3,600 dials. At 40% answered, 1,440 calls connect and bill 5,040 minutes once each call is rounded up by half a minute. Those minutes cost $70.56 on the phone leg, $20.16 on the browser leg and $12.60 for recording, and three local numbers add $3.45. Three seats add $15.00, so each rep costs about $40.59 a month.

The surcharge table still appears: 2,160 unanswered dials are 60% of the month, over Twilio’s 20% line, which could add $32.40. The average call across all dials is 72 seconds, above 30, so the per-minute charge does not show.

What does a 10-rep team pay on cold lists?

Ten reps making 100 dials a day each on 20 days, with 25% answered and 1.5-minute calls, pay about $216.50 to Twilio, or $266.50 with $50.00 in seats.

That is 20,000 dials, of which 5,000 connect and bill 10,000 minutes. Calls and recording cost $205.00, and ten numbers $11.50. With 15,000 unanswered dials and an average of 23 seconds across all dials, under Twilio’s 30-second line, both surcharges can apply: $225.00 for unanswered calls and $100.00 on billed minutes, for $591.50 if Twilio charged both.

Rapidialer pricing uses about 1,000 billed minutes per rep as its example, which gives $266.50 for ten reps and $79.95 for three, seats included. That rule of thumb leaves out the surcharge risk, which is why a cold list deserves its own run here.

What does each conversation or meeting cost?

Divide the monthly total by your real conversations, then by the meetings they produced. In the 3-rep example, $121.77 over 1,440 answered calls is about $0.08 per answered call, seats included. Answered here also counts voicemail, so if half of those were real conversations, the cost per conversation doubles to about $0.17.

Meetings follow the same arithmetic. If one conversation in ten books a meeting on your list (an illustration, not a benchmark), the 3-rep team books about 72 meetings for $121.77, roughly $1.69 each in dialer and Twilio spend. On the 10-rep cold list, with more dials per conversation, the same rates give about $1.97 per meeting once the unanswered-call surcharge is counted. Salaries are the larger cost and are not in this outbound call cost calculator.

How do you read the calculator’s results?

Read the top figure as your likely bill and the surcharge table as the worst case. Estimated monthly cost is the sum of the lines below it, followed by the same figure per rep.

  • The line table lists seats, calls to US numbers, the browser leg, recording and local numbers, each with its minutes or count, so you can see which input drives the total.
  • Possible Twilio surcharges appears only when your inputs cross the 20% unanswered line or the 30-second average line. Each row names the threshold it crossed.
  • Total if Twilio applies them adds those rows to the estimate. Twilio’s terms say it may charge them, so budget between the two totals.
  • The note under the tables gives the month’s dial count and reminds you that taxes and regulatory fees are excluded.

How do you check the estimate against your Twilio bill?

Compare it with your first month of real usage in the Twilio Console, where Twilio lists voice minutes, recordings and numbers as separate usage categories (Twilio usage records). Calls placed with Rapidialer appear there because they run on your own Twilio account.

If your minutes come in well above the estimate, your answered calls are longer than you entered. If the surcharge lines appear on the invoice, lower the unanswered share with cleaner lists and spaced-out retries in the power dialer.

Twilio call cost calculator: questions and answers

Which inputs matter most in the Twilio call cost calculator?

The answered share and the average call length drive almost the whole estimate, because only answered minutes are billed at $0.0205 with recording. Dials per day and days per month set the volume, and the answered share also decides whether the surcharge table appears. Take both figures from your call history if you have one. The rates are fixed from Twilio’s published US pricing, so unlike a general Twilio pricing calculator there is nothing to choose there.

Why does my estimate show surcharges?

Cold calling often leaves most dials unanswered. When 20% or more of a month’s calls are unanswered or six seconds or shorter, Twilio’s North America terms allow a per-call charge, and a short average call can add a per-minute charge. Twilio says it may apply them, so the calculator shows them apart from the main total.

Does Rapidialer mark up Twilio minutes?

No. Rapidialer runs on the customer’s Twilio account, so Twilio bills every minute, recording and number directly at its published rates, and the calculator uses those same rates. Rapidialer charges only for seats, $5 per seat a month, which you can switch off in the calculator to see Twilio’s part alone.

Can I use the calculator as a cold calling cost calculator per meeting?

Yes, with one extra step. The Twilio call cost calculator gives the monthly total and the answered calls; divide the total by your conversations for a cost per conversation, then by the meetings those conversations booked for a cost per meeting. The calculator does not ask for a booking rate, so use your own from call analytics rather than an industry figure.

Does the calculator include international calls?

No. The Twilio call cost calculator prices every dial as a call to a US number at Twilio’s US rate. Twilio charges each country its own per-minute rate, and calls only connect to countries allowed in your account’s voice geo permissions. For a mixed list, estimate the US share here and price the rest from Twilio’s pricing page for each country.

Why does the calculator add half a minute to every answered call?

Twilio bills each call in whole minutes, rounding any partial minute up. Across many calls, that rounding adds about half a minute to each one, so the calculator bills the average length plus half a minute, and at least one minute per answered call. Your Twilio usage after the first month gives the exact figure.
